When you have too much thing to handle in your life, when you feel that 24 hours a day is not enough, remember this story of a jar and a couple cans of beer.

In a philosophy class, a professor stood before the students with some stuffs on his table. As the class began, the professor pulled a jar to him and began to fill it with some golf balls. He asked his students if the jar is full. All his students nodded their heads in agreement.

Then the professor picked up a box of pebbles and began to pour the pebbles into the jar and shook it a little bit. The pebbles rolled and filled in the gap between the golf balls. “Is the jar full?” ask the professor. Once again, everyone agreed that the jar was full.

The professor bent down a little while and came up with a packet of sand. The students began to laugh and the professor filled the jar with the sand. Then he knocked the jar on the table lightly just to make sure that the sand filled in all the space in the jar.

“Has it full?” enquired the professor again. This time the students were damn sure that the jar was already full. Nothing else could have filled in the jar.

Out of nowhere, the professor produced 2 cans of beer and without wasting the time, he pour the beer into the jar, slowly.

“Gosh” said some of the students. They just can’t believe that they were wrong again.

After empty both cans of beer, the professor said to the class.

“Now, this jar represents your life.

The golf balls are the important things in our lives such as your family, relationship, children, health, and friends. If you lost everything else, you still have lost everything else; your life will still be full.

The pebbles are like the other things that matters such as your job or career, your mortgage, house, car, computer, internet while the sand stands for every other small stuffs.

Here’s the thing.

If you put the sand in the jar first, there wouldn’t be any space left for the golf balls and the pebbles. That’s life, if you fill your time with those unimportant things, you’ll end up having no time for the really important task, responsibility or routine.

Pay attention to the things that are really matters to you such as spending quality time with your children, go for exercise, bring your spouse for a romantic dinner … etc.

Take a very good care of your golf balls first. Make sure you know what’s important for you. The rest are just sand.”

There was a profound silence after the professor finished his explanation.

Then, a student raised his hands with a puzzled look on his face and asked, “Then, what’s the beer for?”

The professor laugh for a few seconds and said, “I’m glad that you ask. No matter how busy you are, there’s always a room for a couple cans of beer.”
